The main thing to understand is that people get sent to hell not for actions, but first and foremost for their relationship status with their creator: in a relationship or not.

All sinful actions are just the symptoms of the main disease - a rebellion against God. Some are more severe than others, but all, whether small or great highlight that someone is not in a right relationship with God.

About fear: There should be no fear, no uncertainty. You described a works based salvation, where someone has to do things in order to have their sins forgiven. Yes, there's fear there, because you never know if you've done the right thing or whether God has forgiven you. But in the Bible, salvation is not works based - it's grace based.

But I'm not catholic, so I won't go further on this point.

It's ridiculous but that's about it really. Not to mention the fact that there is not true historical record of the man Jesus during the time period in which he supposedly lived in.

If you're suggesting that he may have not existed, you're in the stark minority.

The miracles that are ascribed to him are also considered a part of mythology adapted from various other "messiahs" (i.e. Horus; an Egyptian god and many others) all of whom were reported to have healed the sick, cured the blind, died in public, and rose from the dead (zombies?)

To sum it up, people on the interwebs have (either purposely or unknowingly) puffed up these similarities to levels that they aren't actually at. And any similarities that are legit are stupid ones like "he healed people! He raised the dead!". That's so vague that it could be ascribed to anyone...

erm - it's spelled Buddah (with the "h" and "a" switched) because the name was already taken on my server - not a typo; it was done on purpose. So i figured same name in Server would be used in Forums - so how's that for eating your words? kthnxbye

It's a great that you mentioned this. The actual portrayal of hell was never fully described in the Bible. Rather, in order to impress upon the masses at the time (during the middle ages ~ 1000AD) that they should follow Christianity, the Church at the time began preaching more about the damnation parts, and less about the actual saving grace factor that Jesus offered.

Dante pretty much took those ideas of a gruesome hell with demons and all forms of punishment and combined them with elements from the works of the The Odyssey and the Aeneid (Hence why it makes sense to read them in this order: Odyssey - Aeneid - Divine Comedy)

You're right to say that it's a man's interpretation of how hell should look, however, most of the depictions that we have of hell stemmed from his description. So if you're looking for a good summer reading selection, i'd recommend those works and of course some books in the Bible for comparison (on the description of hell -guess which one is more tame).
