Although I agree that we can be used, it is most certainly not common grammar that you used. Grammar wise, you'd put it like "Ashamed to be an egy, are we?" or "Aren't we proud of being egy's?".

The context you used it in insinuates more of a question like "are we ashamed to be an egyptian", indicating that you are one too. Thus the confused egy jumping in trying to rectify it.
