If breathed in small amounts, it makes you faint.
Also, if you hold your breath, how can it kill you? I can hold my breath for 120 seconds (tested it). So if i'd take just 1 breath every 2 minutes, it would still be hard to put me to sleep.

It says it CAN cause death, however, not 100%, since it was so widely used.
