What was the detergents overall effect on the TAC and its inhabitants?
When we used detergent on our TAC it had the worst outcome of all the other variables. We saw results within 2 days of its presence in our TAC, the grass started to turn yellow and die. After that it kept getting worse and worse. We were able to see organisms during the first week. Than the water started to turn brow/red and the organisms and algae started to disappear. By the last day of out TAC the whole ecosystem in which it was in had been destroyed. 1 “ of dead grass is all that remained where it used to be nice and green Nothing lived, all the grass was dead and the aquatic environment was a wasteland. What was the oils overall effect on the TAC and its inhabitants? When we used oil on our TAC it didn’t affect anything until a week or so had passed. The grass began to turn yellow. We saw organisms swimming around in the water portion until about 2 weeks after we started. Than the algae disappeared along with the organisms. On our last TAC day the grass was half dead at 3” and the water was yellow. What was the salts overall effect on the TAC and its inhabitants? When we used salt on out TAC from day one to our last day of observations algae and organisms were living. By the end of our observation period our grass was in the same condition as the oils was, that the grass was half dead at a height of 2” and the water had a yellowish tint. I also noticed that there was moisture all over the inner plastic below the dirt, but that probably wasn’t a factor of the salt. What was the fertilizers effect on the TAC and its inhabitants? When we used fertilizer on our TAC the grass grew more than the other TAC’s. I think the fertilizer helped boost the growth of the grass. But after the water absorbed it and it kept a constant stream of fertilizer to the TAC it was harmful to the grass. After 4 days the grass began to show signs of dying. It began to turn yellow. By the second week of observations the water had turned orange form the fertilizer and no organisms were alive. There were small bits of algae floating around but not a lot. What was the Sulfuric acids effect on the TAC and its inhabitants? When we used sulfuric acid on our TAC it impacted the grass more than it impacted the water. It took about 5 days for the acid to have affect on the grass. At the point almost immediately the grass started to die at a very fast rate. By the last day of our observation not one strand of grass was spared. On the other hand the aquatic environment wasn’t as heavily impacted. There was a decent amount of algae and there were organisms present and the water was a normal color. How did the detergent compare with the TAC control? The TAC control was booming. It had lush green grass growing high.. It had Organisms and algae living happily with no interaction from any foreign substances/chemicals whether it being point source pollution or non point source pollution. The Detergent however was horrible to the TAC, it killed all the grass, killed all the organisms and ruined the TAC permanently, and the water was tinted orange/red. What could you account for the differences between them? The differences were solely based on the fact that the one TAC was contaminated with detergent. If the control had been contaminated with detergent than it too would have died and turned orange. The detergent was the only thing that changed the contaminated TAC. How does this test compare/relate to real world water quality issues? If we see a river/body of water and its environment with similar appearance/condition we would have an idea of what may be causing it. And we may find where it is coming from to help save ecosystems and environments. How does this test compare to any of the water quality tests we did at the river? Depending on what variable is in the river we will be able to see what is surviving based on how many organisms we saw in our TAC’s. But we would need many more variables to make accurate assumptions. What could we conclude we learned from this test in regards to our watershed? It is similar to the answers to the questions above. There might be similar characteristics as the variables in the water. For example if the water will be orange/red there might be detergent in it. And it could lead to a solution toward less pollution. now rep me! |
